Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside France's air force in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, pinpointed through surveillance, was assessed as containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was located in hills just above the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to hit a several access tunnels providing entry to the site... early reports are that the objective was successfully hit," the ministry announced.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned safely, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

The Islamic State group - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This action underscores the UK's leading role, and determination to work closely with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary remarked.

RAF aircraft have conducted patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of the group after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in the year 2019, the MoD reported.

"I must thank all the members of British forces who took part in this strike for their expertise and their bravery," the Defence Secretary said. "They were among numerous UK service members deployed over the holidays. This action, to eliminate militants who endanger our way of life, demonstrates how British military are prepared to act, all year round, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

In December, the American forces conducted what it called a "massive strike" on IS targets in the country, after an assault killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN estimates Islamic State still maintains roughly 5-7 thousand combatants in both countries.
